Seaplane & Hydrodynamic Engineering

Vickers Wave — Hydrodynamic Load Analysis

Hydrodynamic load analysis for the water operations certification of the Vickers Wave, an amphibious light sport aircraft developed in Hamilton, New Zealand. The analysis covers impact load prediction using SILAS, resistance characteristics during planing, and design load case definition for hull and sponson structural substantiation.

Aufwind Involvement

  • Impact load analysis (SILAS)
  • Design load case definition for hull structure
  • Water operations performance prediction
  • Resistance and planing characteristics assessment
  • Certification load substantiation

ITPS Canada — Seaplane Flight Test Curriculum

Curriculum on seaplane hydrodynamics and water operations physics, developed and delivered for the International Test Pilots School (ITPS) in London, Ontario. The course covers water impact mechanics, planing hydrodynamics, porpoising stability, and operational limitations, and is integrated into the ITPS HU-16 Grumman Albatross flight test programme.

Aufwind Involvement

  • Curriculum development
  • On-site lecture delivery
  • Technical content on impact theory, planing mechanics, and dynamic stability

ESA AIR-SOS (Earth Observation)

ESA-funded marine litter research programme that used seaplane operations for Sentinel-2 satellite data validation. Flight test campaigns were coordinated in River Elbe coastal waters for multispectral data collection, where the seaplane enabled both aerial observation and in-situ measurements through sea landings. The Lake LA-4-200, a former North Sea oil spill surveillance aircraft, served as the sensor platform.

Aufwind Involvement

  • Flight operations lead
  • Regulatory compliance and approvals for seaplane operations and payload integration
  • Lake LA-4-200 platform provision
  • In-situ measurement coordination via sea landings
  • Test campaign coordination with satellite overpass timing

Certification & Flight Test Engineering

Stemme S12 Propeller Certification

Certification support for a Stemme S12 propeller installation, covering ground testing, flight test planning, and compliance documentation. The ground test programme validated structural integrity and performance characteristics, followed by flight test methodology development, test card preparation, and in-flight data analysis for EASA approval.

Aufwind Involvement

  • Propeller ground testing programme coordination
  • Flight test planning and methodology development
  • Test card development
  • Certification compliance documentation
  • Test data analysis and reporting
  • Regulatory authority interface

Oratex Design Certification Flight Test Programme

Flight test programme execution for the Oratex aircraft covering system, including initial compliance inspection of the test aircraft, test flight operations, occurrence reporting, and compliance documentation to EASA standards.

Experimental Aircraft Build Inspection & Flight Test

OUV-authorised build inspection and flight test engineering for owner-built experimental aircraft under German LBA regulations. Projects include a Jodel D11A with Rolls-Royce O-200 engine installation and subsequent flight test programme, a Kitfox 1 landing gear and Rotax engine conversion, a Kitfox 5 Garmin G3X Touch avionics integration, and a Pitts S-1 new build inspection.

Aviation Organisation Approvals

AirOffice — Digital Combined Airworthiness Organisation

Aufwind is building its own Combined Airworthiness Organisation as a fully digital operation on the proprietary AirOffice management platform. The CAO is designed to handle airworthiness review, maintenance planning, technical records, and regulatory compliance in a paperless workflow with Part-IS compliant, self-hosted IT infrastructure. The approval process and the software development that supports it inform the consulting methodology for aviation organisation setup.

Aufwind Involvement

  • CAO exposition development and approval application
  • AirOffice software platform design and development
  • Part-IS compliant IT architecture
  • Paperless workflow implementation
  • LBA authority coordination

Aircraft Service Nord — Quality Management & CAO Approval

Quality management system review and organisational audit supporting an additional national CAO approval (DE.CAO.0107) for Annex I aircraft maintenance with LBA, parallel to the existing EASA CAO approval. The scope covered compliance gap analysis, process improvement recommendations, and regulatory authority coordination for the dual approval framework.

Sustainable Aviation

AdHyBau-2 Hydrogen-Electric Propulsion

Advisory role in a hydrogen-electric propulsion systems development consortium for general aviation, which includes Siemens AG, MT Aerospace, TU Dresden, KIT, Fraunhofer, and Additive Drives. The technical advisory addresses aircraft-level integration challenges, certification pathway development, and strategic positioning for market entry, coordinating the technical development with EASA certification requirements.

Aufwind Involvement

  • Aircraft integration engineering (loads, propeller loads, structural dimensioning)
  • Certification oversight and certifiability monitoring
  • STC strategy development
  • Mission profile analysis
  • Safety assessment and regulatory pathway guidance

Regulatory & Industry Engagement

EASA Rulemaking Consulting

Regulatory representation and rulemaking consultation for IAOPA Europe through active participation in the EASA Safety Advisory Body (AG.012, formerly EM.TEC). The work includes commenting on Notices of Proposed Amendment, initiating rulemaking activities, and providing technical input on policy development affecting general aviation airworthiness, maintenance regulations, and seaplane-specific requirements.

Training & Industry Presence

Flight test training delivery as part of Euro Flight Test's seaplane programme, and regular speaker at the AERO Friedrichshafen Maintenance Stage (aerokurier) covering sustainability, fuels, and maintenance regulations. EASA Part-ML maintenance regulations training for flight schools, flying clubs, and CAO organisations across Europe.
